Beetroot & the research

Where cold-pressed juice fits

There's a lot of noise around beetroot and exercise, so here's the honest version. It starts with one plain fact about the vegetable itself.

Beetroot is naturally rich in dietary nitrate.

Pressed cold from whole beetroot, never from concentrate, with no added sugar. That's simply what's in the bottle.

What that nitrate does once it's in the body is where the research comes in.

Much of that research was done here in the UK. At the University of Exeter, Professor Andrew Jones and his team spent over a decade studying dietary nitrate and exercise — in a 2009 study, the participants who drank beetroot juice recorded a 16% increase in time to exhaustion during high-intensity exercise. You can read the University of Exeter's summary of the research in full.

If you train

Athletes found beetroot first

When sports scientists at the University of Exeter started looking at dietary nitrate in the late 2000s, the endurance world noticed fast. Beetroot is one of the richest natural sources of nitrate there is, and within a few years it had travelled from the allotment to the start line: cyclists, runners and triathletes drinking a bottle before a session. We didn't put it there. We just press it properly.

Then the session warmed up, ready

The window used in the research runs from about 90 minutes to three hours before you start. Most people settle on an hour and a half.

The purest hit of beetroot is Pure Beets, 100% pressed beetroot and nothing else. It's a vegetable, cold-pressed. We report the research and let you make up your own mind.

What's in the bottle

Beetroot, and a kick of ginger

From our founder

Why I press beetroot

Lou Stokely, founder of Recovery Juice and qualified Nutritional Advisor

Lou Stokely

Founder & qualified Nutritional Advisor

I'm a qualified nutritional advisor, and beetroot is one of those vegetables I kept coming back to — not because of any single headline, but because it's genuinely worth drinking, and because almost nobody was pressing it properly.

The people who reach for it tend to have something on: a training block, a long ride at the weekend, a 5am start with kids and no time to eat well. So I built a range for real life. Concentrated shots when you want beetroot fast, and blends made to be drunk every day because they actually taste good — Power Beets, a classic apple, beetroot and carrot with a ginger kick; Daily Beets, our runaway bestseller, which softens the earthiness with seven supporting vegetables and apple.

My whole approach comes down to one thing: eat more plants, and a wider range of them. A cold-pressed juice is simply the easiest way I know to get more vegetables into a day you haven't got time to plan.

I won't oversell it to you. I'd rather tell you plainly what's in the bottle and let it earn its place in your morning. That's the whole job.

Make it a habit

The trick is consistency, not intensity

Any vegetable is only worth the amount you actually drink, and beetroot's no different. However you take it, the aim is the same: a habit you'll keep. Here's how to make it stick.

01

Start where it suits you

A concentrated shot when you want beetroot fast, or a full glass when you've a moment to sit with it. Both count — pick the one you'll actually reach for.

02

Anchor it to your morning

With breakfast, next to your coffee, or in your kit bag for after training. Tying a new habit to one you already have is the oldest trick for making it stick.

03

Pick one you'll finish

Daily Beets softens the earthiness with seven supporting vegetables and apple — naturally sweet, and our bestseller for good reason. Power Beets brings a ginger kick. The one you genuinely enjoy is the one you'll keep drinking.

04

Keep it stocked

Every bottle is delivered frozen, so you can keep a few in the freezer and defrost as you go. No forgetting, no waste, no excuses.

When time's really tight, reach for a shot. A concentrated beetroot shot is the fastest way in — one small bottle, cold-pressed, straight down. Our Ginger Beets is beetroot with a ginger kick, made for exactly those mornings.

Beetroot & energy

Your questions, answered

Something we've missed? Get in touch — Lou reads every message.

Is beetroot juice good for energy?

It's a food, not an energy drink, so we won't promise you a lift. What we can tell you is factual: beetroot is naturally rich in dietary nitrate, and dietary nitrate and exercise have been studied independently — much of it at the University of Exeter. We'd rather point you to that research than make a claim of our own. If it's a caffeine-style hit you're after, this isn't that — it's a glass of vegetables you'll actually drink.

Is beetroot juice good before exercise?

Plenty of people drink it before training — it's a popular routine with runners and cyclists especially. If you're timing it, the acute studies used a window of roughly 90 minutes to three hours before exercise. Other research looked at taking it daily over several days, so a regular habit does as much as clock-watching. Either way it's a food, not a stimulant, so drink it when it fits your day.

How long before training should I drink beetroot juice?

The window used in the studies runs from about 90 minutes to three hours before you start, and most people settle on an hour and a half. It's a food rather than a supplement, so there's no strict dose and no perfect moment. If you want the purest beetroot to build the habit around, Pure Beets is 100% pressed beetroot and nothing else.

Will beetroot juice make me run faster or train harder?

We can't promise that, and we won't. Dietary nitrate and endurance have been studied — the University of Exeter's work is the best known — but those are findings about the people in the trials, not a guarantee for you. Treat a beetroot juice as a glass of vegetables you enjoy, not a performance supplement. If you're training seriously, a sports nutritionist is a better guide than a label.

Is beetroot juice a pre-workout?

Not in the powder-and-caffeine sense. There are no stimulants and nothing added, so if you're expecting a buzz, this isn't it. It's a vegetable juice that's found a home in a lot of training routines, taken as a glass before a session rather than a scoop of something.

What is dietary nitrate?

It's a compound found naturally in beetroot and leafy green vegetables — beetroot is one of the richest natural sources, which is why it comes up so often in research on diet and exercise. In our juice it's simply part of the vegetable: we cold-press whole beetroot and don't add or concentrate anything.

How much beetroot juice should I drink a day?

There's no official "dose" — it's a food, not a supplement. We press ours in 125ml portions made to be an easy daily glass, because consistency matters more than quantity. If you take medication, check with your GP before making it a daily habit.

Is Pure Beets stronger than the blends?

Pure Beets is 100% cold-pressed beetroot and nothing else, so it's the most concentrated beetroot in the range. The blends — Daily Beets, Power Beets — mix beetroot with other vegetables, apple and a ginger kick, so they're gentler and sweeter to drink. All are cold-pressed from whole veg; pick the one you'll come back to.

Is your beetroot juice from concentrate?

Never. It's cold-pressed from whole beetroot, raw and unpasteurised, then delivered frozen to keep it as close to fresh-pressed as possible.

Can I drink beetroot juice every day?

That's exactly what it's made for. Our 125ml daily portions are designed as an everyday glass, and consistency is the whole point of the range. If you take medication or are managing a health condition, check with your GP before making any food a daily habit.
