How to Make Celery Juice (Juicer, Blender or Skip the Faff)

Making celery juice at home is simple enough, whether you've got a juicer or just a blender and a sieve. Here's how to do both, how much celery you'll need, how to keep it fresh and the honest shortcut if the washing up isn't for you.

WHAT YOU NEED

Before You Start

Celery juice needs almost nothing: a bunch of celery, a juicer or a blender and a couple of minutes. One large head of celery makes roughly a 250ml to 300ml glass, so a single bunch is about one serving. Wash the stalks well, trim the very base and you can leave the leaves on, they juice fine and carry flavour. That's genuinely it. If you want the background on what celery juice is first, there's what is celery juice.

THE EASY WAY

Method One: With a Juicer

A juicer is the cleanest route and gives you smooth, fibre-free juice. Push the stalks through one or two at a time, leaves and all and let it run into a glass or jug. Give the pulp a second pass if your juicer leaves it wet, then stir and drink. Slow or masticating juicers tend to get more out of celery and make less foam than fast centrifugal ones, but either works.

StepWhat to do
1Wash a full head of celery, trim the base, leave the leaves on
2Feed the stalks through the juicer one or two at a time
3Run the pulp through again if it still feels wet
4Stir, pour over ice if you like, drink fresh
NO JUICER

Method Two: With a Blender

No juicer, no problem. Chop the celery into short pieces, add a small splash of water to get the blades going and blend until smooth. Then strain it through a nut-milk bag or a fine sieve into a jug, pressing the pulp to get the last of the juice out. You'll get a slightly cloudier juice than a juicer gives, but it's just as good. The straining is the fiddly part, so a nut-milk bag is worth having if you'll do this often.

StepWhat to do
1Chop a washed head of celery into short pieces
2Blend with a small splash of water until smooth
3Strain through a nut-milk bag or fine sieve
4Press the pulp to get the last of the juice, then drink fresh
KEEPING IT FRESH

How to Store It

Fresh celery juice is best drunk straight away. If you need to keep it, an airtight jar in the fridge holds for about 24 to 48 hours, though it loses its bright, fresh character fairly quickly as it oxidises. Fill the jar to the top to limit the air and give it a stir before drinking. Making a few days' worth at once rarely works well, the juice just isn't the same by day two. There's more in how long does celery juice last.

A FEW TIPS

Getting It Right

Keep the celery cold before juicing, it tastes fresher. If pure celery is a lot for you, a squeeze of lemon or a chunk of cucumber or apple softens it without turning it into a sugary drink, though purists keep it single-ingredient. Drink it soon after making it rather than letting it sit and rinse your juicer straight away, dried celery pulp is a pain to clean off later.

THE HONEST SHORTCUT

Or Skip the Faff

Here's the honest bit: making celery juice every day takes a lot of celery, a fair bit of prep and a sink full of washing up and the fresh juice doesn't keep. That's exactly why we do it for you. We cold-press ours from raw celery, add nothing and freeze it fresh so it keeps for months. You defrost a bottle the night before and drink it, no juicer, no mess, same fresh-pressed juice. If a daily glass is the goal, that's the easy way to actually stick to it.

QUESTIONS PEOPLE ASK

Frequently Asked

How much celery do I need for one glass?

Roughly one large head of celery makes a 250ml to 300ml glass. A single bunch is about one serving, so scale up from there if you're making it for more than one.

Can I make celery juice without a juicer?

Yes. Chop and blend the celery with a splash of water, then strain it through a nut-milk bag or fine sieve. You get a slightly cloudier juice than a juicer gives, but it works perfectly well.

Do I peel the celery or remove the leaves?

No peeling needed. Just wash it well and trim the base. Leave the leaves on, they juice fine and add flavour.

How long does homemade celery juice keep?

About 24 to 48 hours in an airtight jar in the fridge, but it's best drunk fresh. It loses its bright character quickly, so making days' worth ahead rarely works well.

Can I add anything to it?

A squeeze of lemon or a little cucumber or apple softens pure celery without making it sugary. Purists keep it single-ingredient, but a small addition is fine if it helps you drink it.

Is it worth making my own or buying it?

If you enjoy the process, make it. If a daily glass is the goal, buying cold-pressed and frozen is far easier to keep up, no juicer, no washing up and it keeps in the freezer until you want it.

TAKEAWAY

The Bottom Line

Making celery juice is easy: a head of celery through a juicer, or blended and strained, gives you a fresh glass in a couple of minutes. Drink it fresh, store it airtight for a day or two at most and add a little lemon or cucumber if pure celery is a lot. And if the daily prep and washing up wears thin, cold-pressed and frozen is the honest shortcut to keeping the habit.
