How to Break a Juice Cleanse

The days after a cleanse matter as much as the cleanse itself. Go straight back to big, heavy meals and you undo the ease of it and feel rough. Here's how to bring solid food back in gently and how to carry the good of it into your everyday eating afterwards.

WHY IT MATTERS

Why Coming Off Gently Matters

After a run of juice-only days your digestion has had a quiet spell. Landing a large, heavy or rich meal on it straight away is a lot to ask and it's the main reason people feel bloated or uncomfortable the day after a cleanse. Easing back over a couple of days keeps you feeling good and makes the whole thing worth it.

The rule of thumb is simple: come off a cleanse the way you'd ideally have gone into it. Lighter foods first, smaller portions, building back up slowly. If you prepared well with our how to prepare guide, you already know the shape of it, just in reverse.

DAY ONE

Your First Day Back on Food

Start light and start small. Think raw or lightly cooked vegetables, some fruit, a little soup, a simple salad. Eat slowly and chew well, since your body is easing back into digesting solids. Stop when you're satisfied rather than full.

Keep drinking water through the day and there's no harm in having a juice or two alongside your food if you fancy it. What you're avoiding on day one is the big celebration meal, the takeaway, the heavy plate of pasta or meat. That can wait a day or two.

THE NEXT FEW DAYS

Widening Back Out

Over the following two or three days, widen things out gradually. Add whole grains, pulses and eggs, then fish and lighter proteins, then heavier and richer foods last. Portion sizes creep back to normal as your appetite settles.

You'll often find you naturally want a little less than you did before and that lighter meals sit better. That's worth holding on to and we'll come back to it below.

GO GENTLY ON

What to Reintroduce Slowly

A few things are worth bringing back last and gently: caffeine, alcohol, heavily processed food, refined sugar and very rich or fatty meals. There's no ban on any of them. It's just that after a cleanse they tend to land harder than usual, so give it a few days before they're back in full. On caffeine in particular, ease back rather than diving into a triple espresso, as we cover in juice cleanse and caffeine.

AT A GLANCE

Coming Off, Day by Day

WhenWhat to eat
Day 1 backLight and small: vegetables, fruit, soup, salad. Chew well, stop when satisfied
Day 2Add whole grains, pulses and eggs. Portions still modest
Day 3Fish and lighter proteins, more variety. Appetite settling back to normal
Day 4 onwardsNormal eating. Bring caffeine, alcohol and rich food back gently

Roughly match the easing-back to however long you cleansed for, a one-day cleanse needs less than a seven-day one.

CARRYING IT FORWARD

Make the Most of the Window

Coming off is the first few days. What you eat after that is where the real value sits. A cleanse often leaves you feeling lighter, with your appetite settled and your taste for heavy, sugary food dialled down. That window doesn't last forever, so it's worth using, the habits you set in the week or two after are what carry the good of it forward.

None of this is about strict rules or booking straight into another cleanse. It's about letting the lighter, more plant-heavy way of eating from your cleanse shape your everyday plate a bit more than it did before. Lean into vegetables first and most, fill half your plate with them, favour whole foods over processed ones and keep the water going. If you enjoyed the greens, keep them coming, a daily green juice or a shot is an easy way to keep your vegetable intake up on busy days.

NO RUSH

Keeping It Going Without Another Cleanse

You don't need to cleanse again to hold on to how you feel. A day off solid food now and then, a regular daily juice, or simply keeping your everyday meals plant-heavy all do the job. Some people do a single juice day every few weeks, others just keep a green juice in the fridge for the mornings. Find the light-touch version that fits your life.

If you do want to cleanse again down the line, there's no rush, give your everyday eating a good few weeks first. There's more on sensible timing in how often should you cleanse.

QUESTIONS PEOPLE ASK

Frequently Asked

Can I eat normally straight after a cleanse?

Better not to on day one. After juice-only days, a big heavy meal is a lot for your digestion and is the main cause of feeling bloated afterwards. Ease back over two or three days and you'll feel far better.

What should my first meal be?

Something light and simple. A salad, some steamed vegetables, a little soup or some fruit. Eat slowly, chew well and stop when you're satisfied rather than stuffed.

When can I have coffee or a glass of wine again?

Bring them back after a few days rather than on day one. They tend to land harder straight after a cleanse. There's no ban, just ease them in.

How long should coming off take?

Two to three days is a good guide, roughly matching however long you cleansed for. A one-day cleanse needs less easing back than a seven-day one.

What's the one habit worth keeping?

More vegetables. If you take one thing from a cleanse, make it filling half your plate with veg. A daily green juice helps on busy days and most of the rest tends to follow from that.

Do I need to cleanse again to keep the benefit?

No. A day off solid food now and then, a regular daily juice, or simply keeping your everyday meals plant-heavy all hold on to how you feel. If you do want to cleanse again, there's no rush, give your everyday eating a good few weeks first.

TAKEAWAY

The Bottom Line

Breaking a cleanse gently is what makes it feel worth it. Light and small on day one, widen out over two or three days and bring caffeine, alcohol and rich food back last. Rush it with a big meal and you'll feel it. Then use the window afterwards, lean into vegetables and whole foods, keep the heavy stuff lighter and let a daily juice help on busy days.
