Turmeric
How much turmeric is in a shot?
It varies a lot more than you'd think and the number is worth checking before you buy. Here's how much raw turmeric goes into a shot, why grams of fresh root is the figure that matters and where a 40g shot sits.
How much turmeric is in a shot
Across the fresh shots on the market, it typically ranges from around the high teens to the high forties of grams of raw turmeric root per shot. Our Turmeric Shots sit near the top of that range at 40g of fresh root each, which is a proper amount of turmeric to be drinking in one small bottle.
The figure to look for is grams of fresh root, not vague words like "packed with" or "high strength" on the label. If a product doesn't tell you how much turmeric is actually in it, that's usually a sign there isn't much. The number is the honest bit, so it's the bit worth reading.
Grams of root, not milligrams of powder
The gap that catches people out is between fresh shots and powder-based drinks. A turmeric latte or a tea made from dried powder usually contains a fraction of a gram, often measured in milligrams. A fresh cold-pressed shot is a different thing entirely, made from tens of grams of actual root.
So when you compare a 40g fresh shot to a spoon of powder in a drink, you're not comparing like with like. One is the raw root pressed straight into the bottle, the other is a small amount of dried powder stirred into liquid. If the amount of turmeric matters to you, fresh root is where the meaningful quantities are.
What 40g of raw root gives you
We settled on 40g because it's a genuinely substantial amount of turmeric to get into a drinkable shot without it becoming undrinkable. Neat turmeric juice is intense and bitter, so there's a balance to strike between putting in a meaningful quantity of root and still making something you'll happily knock back. 40g, with citrus and black pepper to round it off, is where we landed.
| Form | Typical turmeric per serving | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Powdered latte or tea | A fraction of a gram | A small amount of dried powder in liquid |
| Many fresh shots | Roughly high teens of grams | A real amount of raw root, at the lighter end |
| Our Turmeric Shots | 40g of fresh root | Near the top of the fresh-shot range |
More root is not a health claim
A bigger number is about how much turmeric you're getting, not a promise about what it will do. A shot is a food, not a supplement and not a medicine and the research you'll have read studied curcumin, the compound, usually as a concentrated extract well beyond anything in a drink. We cover that honestly in curcumin and turmeric. If you're on medication, pregnant or managing a condition, turmeric can interact with some medicines, so check with your GP before making it a daily habit.

Frequently Asked
How much turmeric is in a turmeric shot?
Across fresh cold-pressed shots it usually runs from around the high teens to the high forties of grams of raw root per shot. Ours use 40g of fresh turmeric each, near the top of that range. Powder-based drinks are a different story, often just a fraction of a gram.
Is 40g of turmeric a lot for a shot?
It's a substantial amount, yes, sitting near the top end of what fresh shots contain. There's a practical ceiling because neat turmeric juice is so intense, so 40g balanced with citrus and pepper is about as much as you can put in and still have something you'll enjoy drinking.
Why do some turmeric shots have so little in them?
Usually cost, or because they're built around powder rather than fresh root. Fresh root is more expensive and more effort to press, so a lower number often means less actual turmeric. If a label won't tell you the grams at all, that's worth noting.
Is fresh turmeric better than powder in a shot?
They're different rather than better or worse, but on quantity it isn't close. Fresh shots are measured in tens of grams of root, powder drinks in fractions of a gram. If the amount of turmeric matters to you, fresh cold-pressed is where the real quantities are.
Does more turmeric mean it works better?
More turmeric means more turmeric, not a stronger effect on your body and we won't claim otherwise. A shot is a food. The amount tells you how much of the ingredient you're getting, which is useful to know, but it isn't a health promise. There's more on the research in curcumin and turmeric.
How much turmeric should I have a day?
As a food, turmeric is fine as an everyday part of your diet for most people. One shot a day is a simple, consistent way to include it. If you're on medication, pregnant or managing a condition, check with your GP first, since turmeric can interact with some medicines.
The bottom line
How much turmeric is in a shot ranges from the high teens to the high forties of grams across fresh shots and a fraction of a gram in powder drinks. Ours sit near the top at 40g of fresh root, which is a meaningful amount to be drinking. Just remember the number tells you quantity, not a health outcome.
