How a Juice Cleanse Works
Strip away the hype and a juice cleanse does three simple things: it gives your digestion a rest, it hands you nutrients in a form that is easy to use and it keeps you well hydrated. That is the whole mechanism. Here is what is actually happening across a few days on cold-pressed juice, and, just as importantly, what is not.
Three Things, No Magic
There is nothing mysterious under the bonnet of a cleanse. For a few days you swap heavy, processed, constant eating for cold-pressed vegetable juice and plenty of water. Everything you feel over those days comes down to three plain things happening at once: a rest from the work of digestion, simple nutrients your body can get at easily and good hydration.
Understand those three and the whole thing makes sense, including why the effects are real but modest and why a cleanse is short rather than something you live on. The clearest example is the 3-day reset. Let us take each part in turn.
A Rest From Digestion
This is the engine of a cleanse. Digestion is quiet, steady work that never fully stops when you eat all day. Research on diet-induced thermogenesis has put the energy your body spends breaking food down at roughly 5 to 15 percent of what you burn in a day on a mixed diet. Heavy, processed meals are the hardest of all to sort through.
You would not put diesel in a petrol engine and expect it to run cleanly. A cleanse stops feeding the body the processed food it was never built to run on and hands it good, simple food instead, already broken down into juice. There is far less to decipher and far less heavy lifting to do. That is why the founding idea of Recovery Juice is a break from digestion and why we go deeper on it in why a break from food matters.
Nutrients in a Form You Can Use
Cold-pressing squeezes the juice straight from raw produce under gentle pressure, with no heat. It is never pasteurised and never made from concentrate, so what ends up in the bottle is close to the raw vegetable and fruit it came from. Because the juice is already broken down, your gut has very little work to do to get at what is in it, which fits neatly with the rest from digestion above.
There is an honest trade-off worth naming: juicing leaves most of the fibre behind. Fibre is good for you, which is exactly why a cleanse is short and you return to whole food afterwards. A cleanse is not a replacement for eating vegetables, it is a concentrated few days of them in liquid form, more than you could realistically sit and chew through in a day. We break the day's line-up down in what is in a day of cleanse juice and explain the raw, frozen method in why our cleanse is frozen.
Hydration and Gentle Fuel
The third piece is the simplest. A day on our Signature Cleanse is five 500ml juices, so you are taking on around two and a half litres of fluid before you drink a drop of water on top. A lot of everyday tiredness is really mild dehydration, so steady hydration alone accounts for some of the lighter, clearer feeling people describe.
The natural sugars in the fruit portion give you gentle, steady fuel through the day, which is why a vegetable-forward juice keeps you far more comfortable than a thin, fruit-heavy one that spikes and dips. What the first day or two actually feels like is covered in what to expect, day by day.
The Juice Is Not Cleaning You
This is the part the industry loves to get wrong. A cleanse does not "detox" you and the juice is not scrubbing anything out. Your liver and kidneys handle that every single day, cleanse or no cleanse and they do it whether you drink green juice or eat a burger. What a break from heavy digestion does is get out of their way for a few days, not do their job for them.
So if a mechanism only makes sense with the word "toxins" in it, be sceptical. We pull this apart properly in reset, not detox, what your liver actually does, weigh the evidence in do juice cleanses actually work and clear up the common misconceptions in juice cleanse myths.
Why the Effect Fades and Why That's Fine
The changes a cleanse brings are real but short-lived, which is exactly what you would expect from three simple mechanisms. A small 2017 study on a three-day juice diet found a shift in gut bacteria that partly reversed once people went back to normal food. Any weight change is mostly water and comes back too.
None of that is a failure. A cleanse was never meant to be a permanent switch. Its real value is as a reset of habits and cravings, a clean few days that nudges you toward fresher eating afterwards. Chase that, not the number. We are honest about the scales in do you lose weight on a cleanse and cover sensible timing in how often should you cleanse.
What's Actually Happening
| What happens | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| A rest from digestion | Less heavy processed food to break down, so the body does less heavy lifting |
| Easy-to-use nutrients | Cold-pressed and already broken down, gentle on a resting gut |
| Good hydration | Around 2.5 litres of juice a day, before any extra water |
| What it is not | Not a detox, the juice does no cleaning, your liver and kidneys do that |

Frequently Asked
How does a juice cleanse actually work?
Three ways at once: it gives your digestion a rest from heavy processed food, it delivers nutrients in an easy-to-use cold-pressed form and it keeps you well hydrated. Everything you feel on a cleanse traces back to those three. There is no fourth, magical mechanism.
Does juicing destroy the nutrients?
Cold-pressing uses gentle pressure and no heat and the juice is never pasteurised or made from concentrate, so it stays close to the raw produce. The main thing you lose is most of the fibre, which is why a cleanse is short and you go back to whole food afterwards.
Does a cleanse remove toxins from my body?
No. The juice does no cleaning. Your liver and kidneys handle that every day and a cleanse simply gives them a lighter load to work around for a few days. More in reset, not detox.
Why do the effects not last?
Because the mechanisms are temporary by nature. Gut changes largely reverse and any weight drop is mostly water. That is fine, a cleanse is a short reset of habits, not a permanent switch and its value is in the fresher eating it tends to nudge you toward.
Will I have enough energy?
Most people do, once past the first day. Generous 500ml vegetable-forward juices and steady hydration keep you going and the fruit portion gives gentle fuel. A dip on day one is normal while you adjust, especially if you drink a lot of caffeine.
Is it safe for everyone?
No. A juice-only cleanse is not right if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, live with diabetes or another medical condition, take regular medication, or have any history of disordered eating. Speak to your doctor first. See are juice cleanses safe.
The Bottom Line
A juice cleanse works by doing three ordinary things well: resting your digestion, feeding you easy-to-use nutrients and keeping you hydrated. No detox, no magic, no toxins scrubbed away. Understood plainly, it is a sensible short reset and a far more honest one than the industry usually sells.
